About The Department

About Department of Statistics, University of Nigeria

At the inception of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1960, courses in Statistics were taught in the Department of Mathematics. This continued until 1962 when the Department metamorphosed into the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Astronomy.

The Department grew very rapidly and the great need for manpower in the areas of Mathematics and Statistics led to the urgent need to create an environment where these two disciplines would be better developed to face the challenges ahead. So in 1973, two separate departments – the Department of Statistics and the Department of Mathematics were created from the Department of Mathematics; the Department of Statistics was thus born in October 1973 and by that it became the first full- fledged Department of Statistics in the Nigerian University system.

Members of the Department regularly publish in top international journals, are in the editorial boards of several of these journals, include Fellows of the major scientific societies in their fields, and are highly successful in securing competitive grants from local and international funding agencies.

The Department of Statistics is committed to training students according to the highest educational standards. She offers a wide array of courses and qualitative mentorship, leading to awards of BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in different areas of statistics. The Department also plays a key role in the BSc programme in Statistics and Economics; Mathematics and Statistics as well as Computer Science and Statistics.

The Department of Statistics is currently situated on the ground and first floors of the Prof. J. O. C. Ezeilo Building, also known as “Abuja Building” and is one of the most outstanding departments in the university owing to its relevance and applications in all fields of learning.
